Volunteer Opportunities
- Volunteer Opportunities: Adult One-on-One Tutoring Program
If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer experience, consider becoming a literacy tutor! Our adult tutoring program serves adults 18 years of age and older who would like to improve their basic literacy skills, or who would like to learn to speak, read, and write English.
Students and teachers meet at mutually agreeable times and places. For example, public libraries are often chosen as meeting places. No prior tutoring or teaching background is needed to become a tutor--just patience, a high school diploma, and a desire to help an adult improve his or her English literacy.
The Literacy Council Project provides all training and instructional materials for tutors, and serves as an ongoing resource for training and support. Tutoring schedules are flexible to suit tutor and student availability. On average, tutors spend two hours a week tutoring their student.
Our demand for volunteer tutors remains high. If you are interested in knowing more about how you can help an adult improve his or her literacy so that they can achieve their personal, educational, and work-related goals, please call or email, or submit a Volunteer Intake form.

Volunteer Opportunities: Partners in Reading
Partners in Reading is a reading enrichment program available to all public and private elementary schools in Sheboygan County. The program focuses on students in kindergarten through third grades, matching volunteer reading partners with students to provide the students additional one-on-one or small-group reading opportunities.
The Literacy Council Project provides training and support for Partner in Reading volunteers. Partners in Reading volunteers meet with their assigned students on a regular basis at the student’s school. The minimum weekly volunteer time commitment is one half-hour to an hour. All reading enrichment takes place at the school, during the school day. Volunteers can request placement at a particular school, and every effort is made to honor those requests. Prospective volunteers submit a Volunteer Intake form and attend orientation prior to beginning as a Partner in Reading.
Our next training for new Partners in Reading volunteers will be in Fall 2010.
Call or email to register for this session, or to learn more.
