Information for Students
- One-on-One Tutoring
The One-on-One Adult Tutoring program serves adults who want to improve their reading skills, and those who want to learn to read, write, and speak English. Students are matched with trained, caring volunteer tutors, who provide individualized instruction that is tailored to the student's personal goals and learning style.
The One-on-One tutoring program uses curricula designed for adults and includes books and instructional materials for all levels of learners. Students and tutors meet at mutually agreeable times and places. (For example, many of our tutors and students meet at the public library.)
The tutoring service is free, but students are asked to pay for their student books ($12.00 to 17.00 is the average cost of a workbook). If you or someone you know would like to work with a tutor to improve your reading, the first step is to submit a Student Intake form. The Literacy Council will then set up a brief meeting for the student and an evaluator to assess the student’s goals and needs. After this meeting, the student will be matched with our next available tutor.
